Body Rituals Among the Nicirema I. The Nicirema A. Live in North America B. Little known about origin- but tradition says they come from the east C. Much of their days are spend in ritual activity II. Shrine Rooms A. Believe that the body is ugly and has the natural tendency to break down B. Their only hope is to avert these characteristics through the use of the powerful influences of ritual and ceremony C. Every house a shrine dedicated to this purpose 1) Riches houses have nicer shrine rooms that are very opulent 2) Poorer families try to imitate the richer families’ shrine rooms D. Ceremonies that occur in these rooms are private and secret 1) Only shared with children E. Focal point of the room is a box/chest built into the wall 1) Inside are charms and magical potions- they believe they cannot live without either b) Potions recipes are kept secret by the medicine men in their own special secret potions a) Use the charms and magical potions to help with real or imagery ailments III. Ceremony- occurs each day
