Biological work What is potential energy? -the capacity to do work owing to position or state What is kinetic energy? -the energy of motion Can energy change form in a biological system? Yes II. The laws of thermodynamics -A closed system does not exchange energy with is surroundings whereas an open system can exchange energy with its surroundings. -First law of thermodynamics: energy cannot be created or destroyed, although it can be transferred or converted from one form to another, including conversions between matter and energy. -Second law of thermodynamics: When energy is converted from one form to another, some usable energy-that is, energy available to do work-is converted into heat that disperses into the surroundings. Do the laws of thermodynamics apply to an open system? yes What is the relationship between the first law of thermodynamics and the second law of thermodynamics? -the total amount of energy in the universe is not decreasing with time. However, the total amount of energy in the universe that is available to do work is decreasing over time. -Used to analyze energy relation but actually only apply to closed systems. Over time total energy is in a closed system, constant but What is the relationship between entropy and potential energy in a closed system? -Entropy – a measure of disorder due to random movements (KE molecular energy = heat) Potential Energy ↓ Entropy↑ Can heat do work? Can heat energy do work? Can heat energy do work in a cell? Heat can only do work is heat can transfer flow between two objects that differ in temperature. Heat energy cannot do work in a cell. III. Energy and Chemical Reactions In what sense is the free energy (available) of a chemical system “free”?
