18:16 Russell -he asks what philosophy can do Background Philosophy (2 Greek words, Philo – love Sophia – knowledge, wisdom, truth) -people used to say if you’re not doing it your stupid it’s this thing that you can use practically in parts of life Russell states philosophy is not practically used in your life Said that there are different types of people o Practical Man Only recognizes the physical need but ignores the mental development Philosophy deals with questions that at this point don’t have an answer once it has an answer it becomes something else To get progress we must ask questions, philosophy forces people to ask questions Common Life Don’t ask a lot of questions Close-minded Doesn’t try new things Philosophical life Venture out of your comfort zone Plato Philosophy began in ancient world Socrates – 470-399 bc

Plato – 428 – 348 bc Aristotle 384-322 bce Socrates denies ever teaching anyone, he was maybe more like a mentor to plato Socrates never wrote anything, plato responsible for writing his stuff First part: plato basically wrote from the beliefs of Socrates more accurate Middle period: some think plato was starting to drift from Socrates ideas Late period: Some think plato does stuff on his own Most believe first part Dialogues follow the elenchus or Socratic method Follows same steps each time 1 find an expert in certain field of (courage) 2 ask expert what is (courage) 3 expert gives answer 4 starts to examine the given answer 5 socrates shows why answer is wrong 6 expert estates his answer after admits he was wrong repeat 4 and 5 he refutes every answer they give; never get a real answer just a lot of wrong ones Socrates was married to Xanthippe
