Christian Villaran TA: Chase Zachary What Will Cocrystallize with Kalinite? Abstract :       This lab had three main objectives, which were producing kalinite, purifying the kalinite crystals,  and discovering cocrystallization properties of kalinite. Each one of these three objectives  had  important concepts and techniques that were essential in accomplishing them.  To produce the  kalinite we have to go through various reactions while also using ideas of solubility/insolubility in  order to get the crystals out of solution. To purify the crystals we simply had to wash with D.i.  water to wash out any impurities in the crystal. In this process we had to incorporate the idea of  heat in the process of nucleation. Finally discovering cocrystallization properties of kalinite was  done through observation. By seeing what dyes cocrystallize with the kalinite we can compare  the structures and make conclusions about its cocrystallizing properties. Background: The purpose of this lab is to learn techniques that will enable one to determine if a  crystalline solid will cocrystallize with different molecules, or in this case, organic dyes.  Important concepts (e.g. limiting reagents, nucleation, purification, etc.) must be applied to  determine what was actually happening during the experiment and to reach a concrete  conclusion on kalinite’s cocrystallization properties. Because of its connection with lattice  structure and size, cocrystallization is a key process in some common practical applications of  chemistry. Therefore, in understanding what is happening in this lab, one can also understand  how it can be applied usefully in other industries.  Key Equations: (Balance Equations under  Post-Lab Questions section) _Al (s) + _KOH + _H 2 O                     _KAl(OH) 4  + _H 2  (g)         (eqn. 1) _KAl(OH) 4  + _ H 2 SO 4                     _Al(OH) 3   (s) + _K 2 SO 4  + _H 2 O        (eqn. 2) _Al(OH) 3  (s) + _H 2 SO 4                   _Al2(SO 4 ) 3  + _H 2 O      (eqn. 3) _Al 2 (SO 4 ) + _K 2 SO 4  + _H 2 O                 _KAl(SO 4 ) 2  ∙ 12H 2 0 (s) % yield      =          actual yield        *  100%                           theoretical yield
