Hormones and Sex 05/02/2009 12:53:00 Neuroendocrine System Neurochemical signaling between 2 neurons involves point-to-point  communication (signal is passed immediately and terminates rapidly) Neuroendocrine signaling involves the release of hormones into the blood  stream that then travel to the organs in the periphery (signal takes longer to  be received and lasts longer) Endocrine Glands, their Functions, and Hormones they secrete o Pineal gland – reproductive maturation and body rhythms – melatonin  (hormone that effects sleep cycle) o Pituitary gland : Anterior pituitary – hormone secretion by thyroid, adrenal cortex,  and gonads; growth – growth hormone, thyrotropin hormone ,  adrenocorticotropic hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone,  luteinizing hormone Posterior pituitary – water balance; salt balance – produces  oxytocin and vasopressin Tropic hormones influence the release of hormones from other
