Introduction – The Ku Klux Klan was a mob of 150 outraged Confederate white veterans formed in 1866 seeking black politicians they claimed were trying to “Africanize Alabama.” i. Local African Americans that were involved in the campaign were targets and their homes were vandalized. ii. The white mob or racist police officers had beaten over 80 volunteers and three men were murdered. iii. Churches that African Americans attended were bombed due to some of Africans were involved in the campaign or if the church supported the campaign. II. The Ku Klux Klan were provoked when blacks and whites would break the Old South’s racial code. i. White Republicans (derided as “carpetbaggers” and “scalawags”) and black institutions such as schools and churches—symbols of black autonomy—were also targets for Klan attacks. ii. Black women dressing up and getting fixed up like ladies would provoke the Klan to visit the women’s home at night.
