The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord and the two main cell types are neurons and glial cells. 2) What type of glial cells perform the following functions: a) formation of the myelin sheath in the peripheral nervous system; b) formation of the blood-brain barrier; c) scavenging of dead cells; d) formation of the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. Microglial cells: scavenge through for dead cells and clean up debris Oligodendricyte: forms the myelin sheath within the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) Schwan cells produce the myelin sheath outside of the central nervous system in the peripheral nervous system Astrocytes form the blood brain barrier as well as many other things. They are star like cells that have numerous extensions and run in all directions 3) Which part of the neuron receives information? The dendrites receive information 4) Which part of the neuron sends information? The axon terminals send information 5) What is saltatory conduction? The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
