Onrushing Changes for MSM • So, cost cutting becomes the key to survival but that has societal and political costs- watch dog function declines for example • In depth analysis requires time and resources-no longer feasible You lose things like Watergate investigations when you cut on investigations spending. • Drive is toward ratings achieved as cheaply as possible Onrushing Changes for MSM • One solution for local news is pool reporting- a Fox and another network station pool video coverage • Means fewer views of the same event- eliminates competition which is both good and bad • Competition can focus more resources on an issue or event- provide more perspectives Onrushing Changes for MSM • Or produce excessive duplication • If focus is on cost effectiveness, the easiest story draws the most coverage • Vast stretches of government now go without any coverage either print or electronic • This worsens when you consider the consolidation of the media- alternative
