Carey Beth Condrey 09/11/2008 Lab 1 – Safety in the Laboratory; Hazards to Avoid Post Lab Objectives The primary objective of this lab was to examine the effects of various hazardous chemicals on substances that model things the average human would be in possession of. Three strong acids (HNO 3 , H 2 SO 4 , and HCl), one strong bases (NaOH), acetone, and bleach were mixed with the models. This experiment showed the students how dangerous strong chemicals are and stressed the importance of safety. The following table outlines which model was paired with which chemicals. exp. Number Substance - model Chemical to be Tested 1 Sucrose - sugars in human skin Sulfuric Acid 2 Cotton - common in clothing Hydrochloric Acid, Sulfuric Acid, Nitric Acid 3 Nylon - common in clothing Hydrochloric Acid, Sulfuric Acid, Nitric Acid 4 Hair samples - human hair Nitric Acid and Bleach 5 Egg White - proteins in human skin Nitric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, bleach 6 Polystyrene - similar structure to contact lenses Acetone 7
