Brian Lee October 1, 2008 General Biology: E3 Assignment- Lab 3 Biological Molecules 1. What reagent did you use to measure protein in this lab? What functional group(s) does the reagent react with? The reagent used to measure protein in the lab was biuret. The functional group(s) that the reagent reacts with is the isocyanate group. 2. What reagent did you use to measure sugar in this lab? What functional group(s) does the reagent react with? The reagent use to measure sugar in this lab was DNS. DNS reacts with the carbonyl groups found in aldehydes and ketones. 3. Were any of these results outside of the normal range? Two out of the three results were outside of the normal range. The protein concentration of the sample was 0.7 mg/mL. Normal urine contains up to 0.3 mg.mL, so this reading was over the normal range. The glucose concentration of the sample was 0.5 mg/mL. Normal urine has up to 0.6 mg/ml of glucose. The glucose reading was normal. The pH of the sample was 9.3. Urine is usually within the pH range of 5 to 7.
