Insects as Pests of Plants   Goals Develop an understanding of the types of insect injury to plants and the types  of insect-transmitted plant diseases and their effects on the plants. Develop a general understanding of the plant-insect ecological interaction, the  economic importance of plant damage, major plant pests in the U.S., and the  main types of insect-transmitted diseases and their effects on plants.  Learning Objectives Sketch and label the basic parts of a plant and explain their function.  Name the types of insect feeding for each of the basic plant parts and explain  how the injury from feeding affects the plant.  Recognize types of plant feeding and injury caused by insects given a visual  image or description of the injury.  Name the major categories of insect injury to plants and give examples of  each. List the different types of insect-transmitted diseases.
