Goals Gain an understanding of how and why pesticides are used and of  the general types of insecticides used and how they work.  Develop an appreciation for the pros and cons of pesticide use.  Gain an understanding of the pros and cons of pesticide use and the  concepts of pesticide resistance, toxicity, risk, pesticide fate and  safety.  Learning Objectives Briefly describe how pesticide uses and opinions of their use have  changed over the centuries and in the past 10 years.  List the general types of pesticides used today and 5-6 reasons why  we use these pesticides.  Develop a table summarizing the categories of insecticides. Include  in your table the category (ex. Inorganic insecticide), general  characteristics, how they work as a pesticide, specific examples (ex.  DDT), and the pros and cons of each.  Describe risks of pesticide use.
