Chapter 8: The Terrestrial Planets Mars The Moons of Mars Mars has two small moons: Phobos and Deimos. Phobos is 28x23x20 km (17x14x12 mi). Deimos is 16x12x10 km (10x9x7.5 mi). Both moons are shaped like potatoes, and their surfaces are very dark, similar to many asteroids.

Chapter 8: The Terrestrial Planets Mars Phobos has a density of 1.9; Deimos has a density of 2.1. (Earth’s = 5.52) Both moons appear to be captured asteroids. Phobos orbits Mars in 0.3 days; Deimos’ period is 1.3 days. Both moons orbit very close to the Martian surface. Though Mars is the most oblate of the terrestrial planets, it is still very nearly spherical.

Chapter 8: The Terrestrial Planets Mars The terrestrial planets are massive enough for their gravity to have formed them into almost perfect spheres. Both Phobos and Deimos are too small for gravity to have formed them into spheres. Like the moons of Mars, most asteroids are also non-spherical in shape. This similarity in shape is the main reason that the Martian moons are thought to be former asteroids.

Chapter 8: The Terrestrial Planets Mars Why Does Mankind Explore? Seeking knowledge is one of the things that separates humans from other creatures. Studying the features and atmospheres of other planets tells us much about Earth and the possible futures that await us. Mars Pathfinder with the Sojourner rover landed on July 4, 1997, and began to explore the surface and rocks of Mars.
