Lab Report #5 I Part IV. Homework Questions: I. Explain how to control the size of gold nanoparticles and how to achieve narrow size distribution? The parameters which could influence the size of gold NPs include concentration, temperature, time and vertex speed. Usually, we control the size of gold NPs with different ratio of seed to metal salt; the smaller amount of sodium citrate, the larger the NP is. Longer time or higher temperature also results in larger NP. In order to achieve narrow size distribution, there are several things during the synthesis need to be taken care of: a) All the reducing agent should be added to the solution simultaneously. Otherwise, the nucleation may happen at different time point so that NPs of different size will be produced. b) Particles should be avoided because once there is any particle getting into the solution, they would serve as nucleation, and Au can grow on these particles. This will bring NPs of different size into the solution.
