Mill 11/5 Empiricist - Wants to look at human nature w/ goal of ascertaining the foundation for morality - He thinks the notion is someone misguided Utilitarianism (1861) - Greatest happiness principle- greatest happiness of the greatest # - Misunderstandings- 1. Utilitarianism, principle of utility, happiness principle is too low If we only associate happiness with sensual and physical pleasure (sex or food), it is inadequate Pleasures of swine, life of pig, is not satisfying for human beings To think it is, is to have a base understanding of nature Human beings not satisfied, have higher faculties, capable of more Art, language, letters, etc. All part of human happiness A life where we are hooked up into a machine that provides morphine and vitamins, unsatisfying… Distinction b/w Quantity and Quality Of the pleasures that lead to happiness - Based on tangible assessment of what we value - Promoting happiness, minimizing pain - Qualitatively high pleasures We appeal to the most experienced judges (to people who have satisfied his desires and higher intellectual/creative capacities). Ask them what they prefer
