Spring 2009 What is Culture? 1. Culture encompasses aspects of human existence (broad). 2. Culture makes one group of people different from another. 3. Learned, shared ideas about behavior (specific) EXAMPLES 1. Language 2. Customs 3. Dress 4. Subsistence 5. Social hierarchy 4. The most important thing to remember and acknowledge is that: Cultures are always in flux, they are never constant 5. Subtle changes occur all the time, punctuated by radical changes EXAMPLES 1. Language Change in French language to  accommodate for the feminine term for job titles 2. Customs Greater frequency of “eloping” instead of traditional wedding  ceremonies in the United States 3. Dress Women can wear pants, theatre patrons can wear jeans, male  CEOs can have earrings, tattoos, etc. 4. Subsistence Shift from growing your own food (horticulture) to purchasing  all of your dietary needs 5. Social hierarchy Voting rights for blacks and women; Changes in privacy laws  affects civil rights of the populace. Anthropology Subfields
