Background The film documents a seance conducted by a Balinese medium, Jero Tapakan, in which she channels the soul of a recently deceased person. The deceased persons family has come to Jero in order to obtain information about the appropriate procedure for conducting the funerary rites. The medium enters into trance on several occasions throughout the film. These instances are brought on through prayer and meditation, where the medium, sitting perched just above the attendants, is surrounded by an altar of flowers, candles, and offerings of rice and money (payment for her services). Once in trance, Jeros voice changes into a highly pitched tone and speaks rapidly and with a loud volume. The camera is situated to the side of the event and pans between Jero and the volume....
