The genetic makeup of any disease is extremely complex. In Fragile X Syndrome, the FM R1 mental retardation gene in the inheritable feature found in individuals with the disorder (Brady, 2014). Since Fragile X Syndrome is a highly genetic disease, it is more prevalent that it is gender based. When sex linked genes are crossed, females receive two X chromosomes. On the other hand, males receive one X and one Y chromosome. Since females receive an X chromosome from each parent, unless both parents are carriers of the gene, it is extremely rare for the offspring to be affected by FXS. Even if one parent had an affected gene, the unaffected gene serves as a protective function (Brady, 2014). For males however, they have one X and Y, and there will not be a protective chromosome to help block if there is an affected chromosome. FXS is an X dominant gene and if an affected female passes an affected X gene to her son, there is a good probability they will get FXS (Brady, 2014). One in two hundred and fifty of carriers of FXS are females while one in eight hundred are males (Cohen, 2014).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
