Show all steps neatly in a logical order. Distinguish a vector from a scalar. 1. The truss supports a single force P = 900-lb as shown. (a) Identify zero-force members. (b) Determine the force in member HD . (c) Determine the force in member AB . The final answer to questions (a) and (b)should be in the following form: F HD = xxx lb C or T Where C is for compression and T is for tension. (a) Look at Joint D: DI is a zero-force member. Look at E: EI is a zero-force member. With DI & EI taken out, IA is a zero-force member by looking at I. BJ is a zero-force member looking at B. Similarly, GK, EK and KC are zero-force members. (b) Plan: Joint H has one unknown external reaction ( H Y ) and joins 2 members. So, if we find H Y , we can look at joint H to determine the force in HD. H Y L Y Sum the moments about L to find H Y : -4a (H Y ) + 3a P = 0 which gives H Y = 3P/4 = 675 lb.
