Abortion is the process in which the developing child is removed from a mother's womb. Abortion is a controversial topic in today's society that has strong arguments in support of both sides.

Commonly discussed questions about abortion include: When does life begin? Can we give a person the right to take away the life of another? Is the morning after pill abortion or contraception? Science provides the information and facts about abortion but the way the information is viewed is interpreted differently. The author feels that abortion should be allowed in the United States during the first trimester, a pregnant woman should be allowed to decide the fate of her unborn embryo, and the morning after pill is not abortion. When does life begin? The pivotal argument surrounding the abortion controversy concerns when life begins. Opponents to abortion believe that life begins at conception; when the sperm meets the egg or zygote. At that time, the zygote has the potential to become a human being. Any attempt to abort the zygote is considered murder. This is equivalent to terminating a human life. Proponents of abortion believe that the zygote is not viable outside of the body during the first trimester. Any attempt to abort the developing fetus during the first trimester is therefore justifiable and not murder. "Abortion is the spontaneous or induced therapeutic expulsion of the products of conception from the uterus before fetal viability (fetal weight of less than 171/2 oz (500g) and gestation of less than 20 weeks)" (Springhouse Corporation, 1989, p.911-912).
