Purpose: Week one: synthesize one of two unknown cobalt complexes. Week two: purify and measure wavelengths for five cobalt complexes synthesized. Use these data and the spectrochemical series to determine the identities of the five complexes. Observations: 1. When the NH CL was combined with the cobalt complex, the resulting solution was black. 2. When the aqueous ammonia was combined, the solution produced gas (oxygen). 3. During the heating of the resulting solution, the solution remained black for the majority of the time until suddenly it took on a rust-red color. 4. After approximately 30 minutes of heating, the solution began to precipitate, then after another 7 minutes it became and paste, then in another 7, it dried to a powder. 5. When the powder was added to the hot HCL, the acid took on the color of the powder. 6. Filtration rendered the mixture an orange color.
