1. Abstract The main objective of this lab is to use a differential equation model to test a circuit with a capacitor and an inductor. In addition, this lab’s purpose was also to set the precedent that when dealing with circuits, differentiation was considered “bad” or done only when there was no other option, and integration was considered “good,” or the best way to evaluate these types of circuits. That is because as we saw, if some data had noise, when differentiated, its noise was magnified, while differentiation reduced random noise. Integrating smoothes the curve and should be done if possible instead of differentiation which adds noise. 2. Procedure and Data In this experiment we performed two different procedures. In Procedure Part A we used an RC circuit which consisted of an independent voltage source, a capacitor, and a resistor. The circuit used for this part is shown below in Figure 1. Figure 1. An RC Circuit The measured value of the used resistor was equal to 1 kΩ, and the capacitor measured out to be 0.669μF. In Procedure Part B, we used an independent voltage source, an inductor and a resistor. Below is a diagram of the circuit we used, called Figure 2. Figure 2. An RL Circuit The measured value of the used resistor was equal to 1 kΩ, and the Inductor measured out to be 3.14 mН.
