SOCIAL STRUCTURE Functionalist Give sense of order Easier to develop self-concept because of predictable structure Ability to interpret social situations we encounter Conflict May limit our options and place us in arbitrary categories not of our own choosing Marx: reflects system of relationships for domination among categories of people (owner vs. non-owner) Interactionist How we create meaning in that structure (e.g. stigma of wearing a prison uniform) How to act against that social structure DEVIANCE Deviance Behavior that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society Social Control Techniques and strategies for preventing deviant behavior MECHANISMS OF SOCIAL CONTROL Family and peers socialize norms Government legislates/enforces norms Sanctions are penalties and rewards Conformity (Going along with those who don’t have a special right to direct our behavior) Informal -By ordinary people through such means as laughter, smiles, and ridicule
