COMPOSITION: WHAT IS THE FAMILY Nuclear Family Nucleus or core upon which larger family groups are built Extended Family Family includes relatives such as grandparents, aunts, or uncles (live in the same home as core family) EXTENDED FAMILY The Balkan zadruga in 19 th century Serbia (70%) (data 1970s) Married brothers and their families Single household Single agricultural economic unit Post WWII Lateral extended family declined (industrialization) Lineal extended family increased (longer lives, fewer children, more non- agriculture opportunities American Indians and tribal connections Households of 1 or 2 are on the rise while those of 3 or more are decreasing (particularly of 5 or more) MARRIAGE Monogamy One woman and on man are married only to each other Serial Monogamy A person has several spouses in his or her lifetime but only one spouse at a time Polygamy Form of marriage that allows an individual to have several husbands or wives simultaneously Polygyny One man to more than one woman at the same time
