9/12/08 CLAS 150 1 st generation of Olympians- group of gods who win out over Cronus through Zeus and become prevalent and most important Demeter /Ceres - 3 rd of 3 sisters of older generations “Da-mater”- associated with fertility of the earth “Ceres”=grain (cereal) In charge of fertility in general Identifying her with grain/wheat stocks Torches Wheat sometimes hard to see Seated on a throne, but holding wheat stalk Heziod and Homer don’t tell us much about Demeter Homeric hymns for Demeter (named for Homer) Story portrays family relationship Can see Greek culture reflected p.170- abduction of Persephone This is by Zeus’ design- Per. Playing in field full of flowers (imagery of flowers being plucked) Hades abducts her, done by Zeus’ will p.175- Demeter withdraws fertility from the earth- whole race of mortal man would have perished (not a good thing- nobody to sacrifice) Iris (female messenger) sent by Zeus Persephone returned, but in return not supposed to eat Hades gives her pomegranate seed (maybe abortive powers?)
