11/17 In Class Assignment on Wednesday Sophocles’ Antigone, Media Historical Backgrounds Antigone Finishing family story that we started House of Oedipus Lycos-despot and Nycteus Oedipus was on Nycteus’ side Emphasis that we already have fighting over throne Nycteus’ sons- Amphion and Zethos Amphion marries Niobe, Zethos marries Thebe Laius is king after Amphion, marries Jocasta Creon=Jocasta’s brother Oedipus has 4 children with Jocasta Antigone- daughter “born-against” Ismene Eteocles Polyneices- “much-strife” IN Antigone- children who quarrel all the time Antigone accompanies Oedipus out of town, Oedipus curses the 2 sons who don’t go with him 2 brothers now in line for throne, agree to just share it This doesn’t work because Eteocles and Polyneices get too selfish Eteocles won’t give it up, Polyneices exiled Polyneices thrown out of city, ends up marrying daughter of Adrastos, king of Argos This is a big deal, switching allegiances- betrayal Adrastos wants to attack Thebes, Polyneices agrees to be general 7 gates in Thebes- 7 generals vs. the 7 gates Attacking stalemate, Polyneices duels Etecles, general of Thebes, end up killing each other
