Jared Hartzman Andrei Albulescu 9/19/08 Results and Discussion: Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to determine the densities of both an unknown solid and an unknown liquid. Observations and Data: Table 1: Water Observations Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Mass of Beaker + Mass of 100 mL water 173.162g 176.741g 178.024g Mass of Beaker 80.660g 80.660g 80.660g Mass of combination-mass of beaker = mass of 100mL water 92.502g 96.081g 97.364g Density of water (D=M/V) D=92.502g/100mL D=0.92502g/mL D=96.081g/100mL D=0.96081g/mL D=97.364g/100mL D=0.97364g/mL - Average experimental density of water was 0.953g/mL. - Actual density of distilled water is 1.00g/mL Table 2: Unknown Solid Observations Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Trial 4 Weight of Solid 5.273g 5.270g 5.270g 5.270g

Jared Hartzman Andrei Albulescu 9/19/08 Volume of Water in Graduated Cylinder 10mL 10mL 10mL 10mL Volume of Water + Solid 12mL 11mL 12mL 12mL Volume of Combination – Volume of Water =Volume of Solid 2mL 1mL 2mL 2mL Density of Solid (D=M/V) D=5.273g/2mL D=2.637g/mL D=5.270g/1mL D=5.270g/mL D=5.270g/2mL D=2.635g/mL D=5.270g/2mL D=2.635g/mL - A conclusion that was made is there was an error that occurred when measuring the volume of the solid in trial 2 because it led to a density value twice that of the other three trials, therefore this trial was erroneous. The Q Test was used here to show this: Q = [Xq-Xn]/ w Q = [5.270g/mL – 2.637g/mL] / 2.635g/mL Q = 0.999 which is greater than the value given in Table A.3 for 4 trials therefore this trial did not need to be included in the calculations.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
