Jared Hartzman Andrei Albulescu 9/19/08 Volume of Water in Graduated Cylinder 10mL 10mL 10mL 10mL Volume of Water + Solid 12mL 11mL 12mL 12mL Volume of Combination – Volume of Water =Volume of Solid 2mL 1mL 2mL 2mL Density of Solid (D=M/V) D=5.273g/2mL D=2.637g/mL D=5.270g/1mL D=5.270g/mL D=5.270g/2mL D=2.635g/mL D=5.270g/2mL D=2.635g/mL - A conclusion that was made is there was an error that occurred when measuring the volume of the solid in trial 2 because it led to a density value twice that of the other three trials, therefore this trial was erroneous. The Q Test was used here to show this: Q = [Xq-Xn]/ w Q = [5.270g/mL – 2.637g/mL] / 2.635g/mL Q = 0.999 which is greater than the value given in Table A.3 for 4 trials therefore this trial did not need to be included in the calculations.
