Leon Jang English 2000-64 Ms. Lei Lani Michel Argumentative Paper In an increasingly fast paced world, employers have less and less time to review and select individuals for their jobs. Employers don’t have very much time to assess the massive amount of individuals and determine whether or not they are qualified or suitable for the job they are offering. Resumes and cover letters allow employers to assess a jobseeker and determine whether or not they are qualified for a certain job. Resumes and cover letters have now become standard in the today’s job market. It is a company’s preliminary measurement of how qualified a person is for a certain position they are offering. Resumes usually contain one’s education, major, club activities, experience, skills, and achievements. Companies use these indicators to determine whether or not the jobseeker is qualified for the position they are offering. Resumes almost never include hobbies, parking tickets, the last time you went to the grocery store because it’s completely irrelevant on how well you are going to perform on the job. Depending on the field, employers look for different things in a resume but they will always look at a person’s education, previous experience, and cover letter. So if a jobseeker wishes to be noticed, they need to make themselves stand out in one or more of these three areas. In earlier generations, people could get a job easily with a bachelor’s degree as going to college was not as common as it is now. Because of the large push for education, people who wouldn’t have gone to college before are going to college thus making it harder to attract attention to oneself with just a college degree.
