Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs

Higher needs only come into focus once all lower needs are mainly or entirely
satisfied.

Deficiency needs
Physiological needs (need a place to eat, sleep, etc.)
Safety needs (need to feel secure in your physical environment)
Love/Belonging needs (need to feel loved // romantic and
nonromantic. Social integration – need to be part of something
bigger.
Esteem needs – self and respect from others
Self-actualization – make the most of unique abilities.
Self actualizing people

Embrace facts / realities of world
•
Are spontaneous in their ideas and actions
•
Are creative – creative in work and in other relationships
•
Are interested in solving problems
•
Feel a closeness to other people, and generally appreciate
life.
•
Have a system of morality that is fully internalized and
independent of external authority
•
Judge others without prejudice
Self transcendence – spiritual needs (this was above self
actualization)
