Schizophrenia o Hallucinations – sensory perceptions that occur without an external stimulus o Very rarely, people with schizophrenia may hurt others because of these symptoms. o Most individuals with schizophrenia are not violent; more typically, there are withdrawn and prefer to be left alone. o Language and thought disturbances – words lose their usual meanings, logic is impaired, thoughts may be disorganized and bizarre o Word salads – a jumble of extremely incoherent speech o Neologisms – made up words o Delusions – mistaken beliefs maintained in spite of strong evidence to the contrary; not explained by culture o Paranoid delisions- false and irrational belief that they are being chated, harassed, poisoned, or consipired against.
