Unformatted text preview: MAE146: Astronautics Homework #2 Assigned: Saturday, January 17 th , 2007 Due date: Monday , January 26 th , 2007, (at the beginning of the lecture) Please justify all of your answers and explain your reasoning with sentences. Problem 1 (30pts): On gravity When attached to a rotating planet, and object feels the gravitational attraction of the planet, as well as the centripetal acceleration. 1. Write down the apparent acceleration of gravity felt by the object in terms of the angular velocity of the planet. First use vectors, then express your answer in a frame centered at the planet and 2. Using the data provided by the JPL solar system dynamics group (http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/), compare the gravitational acceleration and the apparent gravity at the surface of a body for the Earth, the Moon and Mars,Ceres. Problem 2 (70pts): On trajectory integration In class we have seen how to integrate the trajectory of a spacecraft in an inertial frame of reference under the influence of a planet modeled by a point mass. In this problem we investigate the problem of the trajectory integration aroundof a planet modeled by a point mass....
