Syllabus MAE 146: Astronautics — Winter Quarter 2009 Instructor:  Benjamin F. Villac Office: EG 3227 ; Phone: 824-8148 ; Email:  [email protected] Office hours: Tu 9:00-9:50am and 11:00-11:50am EG 3227  Other times by appointment. Course description:  Broad overview of space systems from launch to operations and reentry. Emphasis will  be placed on the basic mechanics, models, and control strategies used in astronautics.  Topics   will   include   motion   in   gravitational   force   fields,   orbit   transfers,   rocketry,  interplanetary trajectories, attitude dynamics and stabilization, navigation, reentry and  the space environment. Initiation to spacecraft trajectory design will be conducted with  the help a professional astronautical software suite. Class schedule: Lecture:  MWF 1:00 – 1:50 pm, SH174  Discussion: Tu 10:00-10:50 am, SSTB 220B  (may change) Prerequisite: Engineering Dynamics (MAE 80):   Fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems
