MAE157 – Winter 09 DESIGN PROJECT Objective: Design a minimum-weight cantilever beam that must withstand an end load P = 1 kN over a span L = 2 m , without yielding or buckling. A number of constraints are imposed on the materials and the cross-section geometry (see below). You can assume that the load P is applied uniformly on the bottom flange of the section, as shown in Figure 1. Constraints: (a) Geometry 1. The geometry of the cross-section is depicted in Fig. 2. 2. Write a report presenting your solution. Part of the grade is assigned to the elegance of the presentation, so clearly describe your approach. The report must contain the following: A. The dimensions and weight of your structure.
