UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering ENG 6, Engineering Problem Solving Winter 2009 Problem Set #2 Due Friday, Jan. 16 at 8:00 pm (Late submissions will be accepted until Monday, Jan. 19 at 8 pm, for a maximum of half credit.) For the following problems you are to create the specified script files and submit them via the MyUCDavis web portal, as described in the instructions below. IMPORTANT NOTE: It is okay to work together on the homework assignments, but in the end you must write up and submit your own version of the script separately from anyone else. That is, you may not copy and submit someone else’s script or portion thereof, even if you helped work on it. Problem 2.1 The diameter of the Earth is 7,926 miles and its rotational period is 23.934 hours. The diameter of Jupiter is 88,736 miles and its rotational period is 9.85 hours. Prepare a Matlab script file to compute and display how fast the surface of Earth is moving at its equator and the surface of Jupiter is moving at its equator (compared to the center of each planet, which is assumed to be at rest). Display your results to 1 decimal place as follows (where X and Y would be the actual values calculated): Speed of the surface of the Earth at its equator is X miles per hour. Speed of the surface of Jupiter at its equator is Y miles per hour. Use comment lines in the script to explain the computations. At the top of the script, include three comment lines as follows: %Engineering 6, Winter 2009, Problem 2.1 %Your name and the last four digits of your student ID (e.g., John Smith, 5872) %Your discussion section number and time (e.g., Section B09, Tues. 9-10) Note: Don't use the command window to write the script and the diary command to save it.
