Introduction In 1821, Costa Rica became one of several Central American provinces that jointly declared their independence from Spain. Two years later it joined the United Provinces of Central America, but this federation disintegrated in 1838, at which time Costa Rica proclaimed its sovereignty and independence (CIA, 2008). Becoming an independent country then meant that a government must be established as well as an economy. Because of the tropical region banana plantations became a large part of the economy very quickly. In 2007, banana exports accounted for 2.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) and contributed 7.1% of revenue for the country's sales abroad (Corbana, 2008). The problem with such a large portion of the country producing bananas is that lots of pesticides are used on the plantations. There are four pesticides that are used more often than others and those are Thiabendazole, Chlorpyrifos, Imazalil, and Propiconazole. These pesticides enter into the water streams of Costa Rica which are used as drinking
