Homework Assignment 3 – Due March 2, 4 pm Problem 1 – Compound A undergoes a reversible isomerization reaction A↔ B, over a supported metal catalyst. Under reaction conditions, A and B are liquid, miscible and nearly identical in density. The equilibrium constant for the reaction is 5.8 (in concentration units). In a fixed bed, isothermal flow reactor in which back-mixing is negligible (i.e. plug flow), a feed of pure A undergoes a net conversion to B of 55%. The reaction is elementary. If a second, identical flow reactor at the same temperature is placed downstream of the first, what overall conversion of A would you expect if (a) the reactors are directly connected in series? (b) The products from the first reactor are separated and only unconverted A is fed to the second reactor? Problem 2 – Pure butanol is to be fed into a semi-batch reactor containing pure ethyl acetate to produce butyl acetate and ethanol. The reaction is (for the chemistry challenged) CH 3 COOC 2 H 5 + C
