Worksheet 6: Friction Questions 1. This is true. You exert a backwards frictional force on the Earth, and by Newton’s 3 rd Law, experience a forward force on yourself, due to the Earth. 2. Since there’s no way to exert an horizontal force on the ice pond (and recieve the reaction force from the pond), there’s no way to walk to the shore. The only way to move is to throw something. In this way, the you give an object a forwards force, and you experience the backwards reaction force. The object will go one direction, while you will move in the opposite direction. 3. The frictional force on the plate is zero. Friction will only attempt to prevent the relative motion of two objects in contact. Since the waiter and the plate are traveling with the same velocity, with no acceleration, there is no need for friction to accelerate the plate. Problems 1. A block is pulled over a horizontal surface. (a) The forces are: Normal force fue to the ground, gravitational force, the force you’re applying to the block at an angle, and the frictional force backwards.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
