Worksheet 7: Centripetal Motion Questions 1. You are thrust back into your seat because your seat is accelerating forwards while you are trying to continue at the same velocity you were traveling at before. The car exerts a forward force on you, while by Newton’s 2 nd law, you exert a equal and opposity reaction force backwards on the car. 2. Here, a similar thing is happening. The car is accelerating because the direction of the velocity is changing. You however, want to go in a straight line, which if the seat belt didn’t stop you, would lead outside the car, tangent to the path the car is following. This leads you to feel as though you are being thrust to the side of the car, while in actuality you are traveling in a straight line and the car is accerating. 3. As the washing machine spins, objects in the machine are put in motion, which in general, will cause them to move radially outwards.
