Before any state is readmitted, i. they need to abolish slavery (13 th amendment) ii. also have to pass the 14 th amendment iii. also have to pass the 15 th amendment to give voting rights to the male freed slaves and everyone (except gender; women) 2. congress then pass with Johnson: 10 year of Office Act a. if a president wanted to get rid of a cabinet member appointed by the previous president, he needs the approval of the senate. b. Why would they care about that? i. To protect lincoln’s cabinet member. ii. He’ll appoint people who make sure south to not follow the amendments. iii. Edwin Stanton : appointed by Lincoln, secretary of war and was RR. 1. Who make sure people have the right to vote? The military. 2. Therefore he is in charge of reconstruction. 3. Johnson fired him but he refused to leave. 4.
