Indians were human beings and that they can be assimilated to American society. iv. Reformers said they could become good American citizens v. Indians didn’t like the reformers vi. To integrate: 1. Need to get rid of reservation and give them their own farm. a. Congress pass in 1887 “Dawes Act” i. Broke reservation and gave 160 acre to Indian families ii. Indians tried to sign them but systematically defrauded in the end iii. Native Americans had 1/3 of the land first
