February 19, 2009 I. Second Red Scare a. Thought Soviet’s nuclear bomb, North Korea’s invasion, China’s conversion to communism b. Senator McCarthy listed the blasphemy of the world. c. “How these happen?!” d. He said that there were spies and conspiracies! e. Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense are working for communism! f. Enormous accusation and charges g. McCarthy had no evidence for these charges and weren’t true! h. How’d people become so that people are making such accusations? i. His career thrived rather than suffer! j. Why? i. There were real Soviet agents ii. Up until 1945 iii. Defection of one of the member led to them being exposed iv. By the time people started actually worrying, there was actually none! II. The conspiracy1930 Elizabeth Bentley a. one of the most important Soviet spies in America during WWII! b. Had a very conventional upbringing c. Very old family in New England d. Very protestant and conservative e. Like about 1 million Americans during the depression, she became interested in communism f. Collapse of economy convinced a lot of Americans that capitalism isn’t the greatest way! i. Looked at Soviets as an alternative ii. Some Americans didn’t know about repression iii. “they understand economy! Government need to own all means of production” iv.
