a. Britain was only one holding out against Nazis b. So Hitler started “blitz” of bombing on Britain as a threat before officially invading c. Opinions begin to change in U.S., but still majority is the same d. We shoud “support” Britain! e. Spring 1941: Roosevelt asked congress to pass an act that ended the neutrality: Lend-Lease Act 1941 i. Gave weapons to anyone who needed them to keep out of U.S. ii. Gave to Britain iii. People knew it was end the period of neutrality iv. But Roosevelt wanted to help “a neighbor” v. We’ll be “arsenal of democracy” vi. This will create defense material vii. Passed in march, and in june: 1. Hitler took a major step and invaded the Soviet Union who had a non-aggression pact with him 2. Now it is a war with British and soviets 3. Now lend-lease is on soviet (their formal enemy) 4. Soviet and Britain has an odd alliance (commy and anti- commie) 5. 10 billion extra dollar on arms to send to the British 6. what mayer told him to do for a while! 7. Now they are out of the depression! II. Lend Lease a. Send arms with a ship to navy ships b. German submarines start killing American ships and sailors c. The war start to affect Americans! d.
