Feb 29, 2008 Basic steps in field research o Entering the field o Developing and Maintaining relationships o Sampling people and events o Collecting data Entering the field o Read about the setting o Think about how to dress, how to conduct yourself o Find someone to get your “foot in the door” and show you the ropes o How would you enter the field for a study on: Gang life? Casual, where colors that fit the gang, etc Policing? Proper, semi-militaristic, try to get on there level Corporate accounting fraud? Look for who whistle-blowers, those with problems; dress up, polite, respectful Developing and maintaining relationships o Develop plausible and honest explanation for yourself and your study o Maintain support of key individuals in setting o Don’t be too aggressive in questioning others, to the point that you violate local social norms o Don’t fake similarity with your subjects (don’t “go native”) o Avoid giving and receiving money or gifts
