Feb 22, 2008 o Father fights for south o Shot down by evil sergeant o Son vows revenge o Mother laments her son, locked up in notorious Point Lookout Prison in Maryland o PA - total silence + isolation o If prisoner violates rule; prisoner get bread and water diet o N.Y. – “congregate” system – partial isolation o Sing Sing, etc… o Guards gave some lenience for talking o If prisoner violates rule; prisoner gets whip o Which model wins? o New York system prevails; Connecticut replaced old new gate – maintained disciple with solitary, bread and water, and whipping o By 1840s every state has a penitentiary – mostly modeled from New York congregate system; though these places did not live up to expectations of Quaker founders o Civil War often left out of correctional textbooks o One reason was free slaves but, One reason for civil was Dred Scott decision Supreme court upheld blacks are really men not 3/5s of a man o War exposed problems with prisons o Early off prisoner exchange was tried, didn’t work a lot
