March 26, 2008 Bureau of justice statistics (BJS) o Research arm of US justice department o Been around for 30 years o All kinds of data; trends, predictions, etc… o Pue study o Ladder population of older prisoners is growing rapidly o Some states spend same on prisons as on higher education o Punishment is deprivation of liberty not violent attacks, diseases and other things that happen in prison Society heeps on extra tortures and punishments, should not be proud o Keeping of accurate crime and report statistics by government One of the most misunderstood things and one of most misused terms is distinction between jails and prisons. o Jails primarily hold two types of people o People convicted of misdemeanor offenses and serving a year or less Vandalism, disorderly conducted, DUI, malicious mischief, etc o Someone not yet convicted of a crime Has been arrested, not yet tried, but awaiting disposition of case Can divide into two major groups People being held because they don’t have possibility of bail at all
