March 28, 2008 Jails – as of 6/30/06 -> 766,010 held in local, county, city jails 60,222 under jail supervision, but is community-supervision programs Jail incarceration rate – 256 (as of 6/30/06) Hillsboro county jail in Florida does a good job of processing inmates - FALSE Jails o Reports come out once a year from BJS o Comes out June 30 th of the previous year o Has details of jails – every jail is supposed to report their population, age, race, etc o Could be on test: BJS reports on one day from all jails in the country, is estimated about 15 million people will pass through the nations jail over the course of the year o People who are not habitual criminals are at great risk of suicide while in jail o In any given jail in any given city or county, you have very diverse population o A lot of prison classification systems are not good, in jails there is no time for classification o When we look at populations, we use rate figure; quite different from crime statistics o Crime rate is always the number of a certain type of crime per 100,000 people
