Carolyn Johnson Chem 262L, sec 419 – Wed 1pm Experiment 4: Dehydration of 2-Methylcyclohexenol In a 5mL round bottom flask, 1mL of 85% phosphoric acid was added to 3mL of 2- methylcyclohexanol. Also added to the flask was a boiling chip and a magnetic stir bar. The round bottom flask was set up to reflux for 30 minutes on power setting 5. After 30 minutes, the condenser was covered with aluminum foil, allowing distillation to occur. Distillation was very slow, and did not begin to occur until the power setting was turned up to 7. The distillation then happened very, very quickly. The highest observed temperature spike during distillation was 55°C. Approximately 2-3mL of the organic layer was collected from the distillation vial, and dried with MgSO 4 until the residual cloudiness disappeared. The vial was then taken to be analyzed by gas chromatography. Due to equipment errors in the Gas Chromatography, the data summarized below is from a sample provided by the TA. Data Table 2
