Carolyn Johnson Chem 262L, sec 419 – Wed 1pm Experiment 5 A Wittig Reaction: Preparation of a para -methoxycinnamic Acid In the oven, one 5 mL round bottom flask with a stir bar and two test tubes were dried for approximately 10 minutes. The test tubes and the flask were stoppered with septums to minimize exposure to water in the air. To the flask, 2 mL of 1.2 N NaOCH 3 was added with a pipet, and allowed to begin stirring the reaction solution. Into the first test tube went 2.4 mmol, or .476 mL of triethylphophonoacetate. It was then added dropwise into the NaOCH 3 mixture. The mixture was then stirred for 5 minutes at room temperature, then placed in an ice bath to cool, while still stirring. Into the other test tube, 2.4 mmol, or .29 mL of p-anisaldehyde was placed. Using a disposable pipet, it was slowly added to the solution in the ice bath. The mixture was then warmed to room temperature and allowed to stir for approximately 15 minutes. After reaching room temperature, the mixture was transferred to a small Erlenmeyer flask
