Clifford Geertz – symbolic anthropologist. Looks at symbols. We are the only animals that use symbols. Religion is a symbol of symbols that acts to establish powerful pervasive and longstanding moods and motivations in people. Anthony Wallace – communal and personal relation. Religion is ultimate transformation where highest ideals and values of a culture are expressed. Combined with a person’s personal and cultural and ethical belief system. Even people who are atheist come from a culture that was partly shaped by religion. Bernadette Deblin – youngest woman ever elected to British Parliament from Ireland. Anthropomorphism - assigning human qualities to things that are not human. Irish believe that feelings come on you, not from you. Religion is a cultural dimension. People are often held together by their religion. Ritual, mythology, beliefs, etc. are learned by experience and imitation. We see that most clearly in the behavior and attitudes of children. Religion functions the same way that a culture does. Explains phenomenon that people didn’t understand. Early ideology was called shamanism
