1/28/09 CLASS NOTES - Arabella Mansfield, first woman to pass the bar o Ends up teaching English o Never ended up practicing law - Clara Foltz fought CA to practice law, but lost o She writes “ The Woman Lawyers Rights Bill” and gets passed o Became the first woman to practice law (Probate law) - Evelyn Cameron o Photographer o Her husband was a naturalist o She documented by taking pictures - Amelia Bloomer o Documented life in the west o Published “The Lily”, a feminist journal NELLIE BLY - was born as a 13 th child in a 2 nd marriage - father died suddenly and left her and her mother with no money - her mother married again but the marriage was abusive and she got divorced - Nellie enrolled in school to learn to be a teacher but the money ran out - She moved to Chicago and her and her mother opened a boarding house - She reads a letter that makes her mad - She wrote a letter to the editor and the editor reads it and hires her - She begins to write for a newspaper - Nellie wrote about poverty, people’s lives outside of jobs
